The Getty Center in Brentwood opened an exhibition on tapestries on loan from the Mobilier National in Paris with a reception on Monday night. Woven mostly during the reign of Louis XIV (1643-1715) these monumental tapestries were meant to express his power and prestige. Gold and silver threads were often woven into these masterpieces. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-size: small;">Last Saturday night FIDM Museum and Galleries had on Opening Reception for the 23rd Annual Art of the Motion Picture Costume Design Exhibition. Costumes from 22 movies made in 2014 are on view, 5 movies have been nominated for an Academy Award</span> for Costume Design, one won in 2014.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Above are costumes designed for Meryl Streep and Johnny Depp in "Into the Woods" by Colleen Atwood. She received a 2015 Academy Award nomination for her work in this movie. Her inspiration for the costumes were the Woods and many include the texture of wood. Meryl Streep's costume was made of pieces of leather stitched to chiffon and combined with leather that looked like cracked bark. Johnny Depp was Atwood's muse for his character, the Wolf. Depp wanted to play the part in a zoot suit, so Atwood had an idea of embroidering the pattern of fur onto a piece of very thin wool cloth that was then tailored into a zoot suit. </div>

Still inspired by the iconic fashion designers like James Galanos, whose gowns are featured on this blog, but modernized and simplified. TODAY JUST AS IN THE 15TH CENTURY FLANDERS.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-p0zwCmAdRKM/U3KGW61WNfI/AAAAAAAAA20/WT9v2ZvnCXA/s1600/Bruges+floor+7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="262" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-p0zwCmAdRKM/U3KGW61WNfI/AAAAAAAAA20/WT9v2ZvnCXA/s1600/Bruges+floor+7.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I have always loved pink, it is wonderful to see it back in fashion. When I travel, whether here in the US or around the world, I love to visit museums of all kinds. In art museums of course I focus on the works of art as a whole, but I am also very interested in the details, the way the artist has rendered the textiles, gemstones or interior details. Recently in Bruges, Belgium, I visited the Groeninge Museum with a great collection of medieval Flemish art.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lUPBIbG9lMk/U3KGP1qZWRI/AAAAAAAAA2s/8bjcOFsZarg/s1600/Bruges+floor+9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lUPBIbG9lMk/U3KGP1qZWRI/AAAAAAAAA2s/8bjcOFsZarg/s1600/Bruges+floor+9.jpg" width="280" /></a></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
Immediately I focused on the pink color being predominant in the garments and floor tiles of these late 15th, early 16th century paintings. Practically all the paintings of this period had floors with pink or pink, green and white tiles. Clearly the trend of the period!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8Ka06szZjlY/U3KGfg4r_6I/AAAAAAAAA3E/fRVI3rGO39A/s1600/Bruges+floor+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="204" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-8Ka06szZjlY/U3KGfg4r_6I/AAAAAAAAA3E/fRVI3rGO39A/s1600/Bruges+floor+1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
It looks like the tiles are glazed, but sometimes have marble tiles added, as above. By Gerard David, 1498.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZWp3VBu4ua4/U3KGfyzdEII/AAAAAAAAA3Y/RmyHsZgvA8c/s1600/Bruges+floor+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="226" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ZWp3VBu4ua4/U3KGfyzdEII/AAAAAAAAA3Y/RmyHsZgvA8c/s1600/Bruges+floor+2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The above floor looks intriguing, I cannot tell what the blue and white tiles are, they almost look like playing cards.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nHXyIm88UNY/U3KMsX2u2BI/AAAAAAAAA4A/7_iHQzzx-GY/s1600/Bruges+floor+11.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="170" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-nHXyIm88UNY/U3KMsX2u2BI/AAAAAAAAA4A/7_iHQzzx-GY/s1600/Bruges+floor+11.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
This floor was one of my favorites, the texture of the green tile is very interesting. Click to see the detail. I was wondering whether I should show the full images, but some of them were a bit gruesome. The painting above shows the man on the left chopping off the heads of three men sleeping in the bed. Their bags are at the foot of the bed. This is part of the St. Nicholas Altarpiece by the Master of St. Lucy Legend, 1479-1505!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YNovM9qdd8g/U3KGgSVxGjI/AAAAAAAAA3c/d8ppGpPMcjI/s1600/Bruges+floor+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YNovM9qdd8g/U3KGgSVxGjI/AAAAAAAAA3c/d8ppGpPMcjI/s1600/Bruges+floor+4.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The tiles above look like stone or marble, I would love to know what the pink ones are.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OH0z1lhMdLE/U3KGrLR52QI/AAAAAAAAA3s/jvuEszubrcE/s1600/Bruges+floor+10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-OH0z1lhMdLE/U3KGrLR52QI/AAAAAAAAA3s/jvuEszubrcE/s1600/Bruges+floor+10.jpg" width="273" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
This painting is by the Master of the St. Ursula Legend, 1482. The floor is quite elegant. Here the pink color has been also used in garments and the altar cloth. It has pleated corners and a contrasting trim on the hem, even the pattern is very 21st century! Everything old is new again.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Two years ago I had a wonderful opportunity to attend a 1st Century Roman dinner at the J. Paul Getty Villa in Malibu. It was outstanding, the food, the presentation, the ambiance were amazing. I blogged about it at the time, it can be seen among my most viewed blogs on the right. This summer the Getty repeated the concept, this time with a 4th Century B.C. Sicilian meal. The fresh sourdough barley and wheat rolls were excellent, with a slight sweat taste. The roasted chickpeas above, seasoned with honey, dill seed, and coriander seed, were surprisingly delicious.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VdXO5K3CKRI/UexSWnhsEqI/AAAAAAAAA1c/6ByVB8lF_qI/s1600/Menu+2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" iya="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VdXO5K3CKRI/UexSWnhsEqI/AAAAAAAAA1c/6ByVB8lF_qI/s320/Menu+2.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Some of history's most celebrated chefs came from Sicily and performance a la Gordon Ramsey was part of the culinary experience. Yesterday evening's menu was inspired by Archestratus of Gela, active about 350 B.C. The first course consisted of "Archestratus's Delight" a trio of fresh fish dishes; seared tune batons coated in cumin and sea salt with balmer of mackerel, garlic and vinegar, sea bass fillet coated in paste of goat cheese with Parthean asafoetida and vinegar and finally swordfish marinated in olive oil with fresh oregano and wrapped in a fig leaf. The tuna and sea bass were excellent, the swordfish a bit dry and bland. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tI9t9tNmlVk/UexSakUg4NI/AAAAAAAAA1k/Wlrc5cf1MEM/s1600/Duck.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" iya="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tI9t9tNmlVk/UexSakUg4NI/AAAAAAAAA1k/Wlrc5cf1MEM/s320/Duck.JPG" width="309" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The main course was a roast duck in Erasistratus's hyposphagma of cumin, asafoetida, honey, salt, creme fraiche and fresh herbs. Unfortunately the consensus at our table was that it was much too salty. Fresh warm broad beans were served with oinogaron dressing as a side dish, as well as a standard green salad, however with sweet boiled grape juice and fish sauce.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hCXgeQ1gfTI/UexSc00KGxI/AAAAAAAAA1s/_Fper_qvKmo/s1600/Dessert.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" iya="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hCXgeQ1gfTI/UexSc00KGxI/AAAAAAAAA1s/_Fper_qvKmo/s320/Dessert.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The dessert was Plakous, a honey-coated cheesecake with yogurt garnish. Again, no raves from our table, it was too dry, where was the cheese? The wines served were from Sicily. The red Alcesti Nero D'Avola 2010 was quite pleasant and went well with the evening's dishes. The white Alcesti Ninfea 2010 which I did not taste, seemed less popular.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
It has been a great honor and a huge pleasure to design a window for <a href="http://www.tufenkianlosangeles.com/">Tufenkian Carpets</a> at the La Cienega <a href="http://www.lcdqla.com/">Design Quarter Legends </a>event. The theme is "Time Capsule, the Past, Present and Future of Design". In my opinion Tony Duquette, the legendary Los Angeles designer, perfectly represents this theme. Hutton Wilkinson, president of <a href="http://www.tonyduquette.com/">Tony Duquette Studio</a>, has been an invaluable help by opening Dawnridge, Tony's Beverly Hills estate, his warehouse and fabrics designed by him for <a href="http://www.jimthompson.com/">Jim Thompson Silks</a> to me.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The window is huge, 37' wide, so I created vignettes representing each three phases. Above and below is Past, with a Tony Duquette Original green velvet sofa and coral table lamps, all circa 1950. The photo above the sofa is by Tim Street-Porter, the floor lamp by Tony Duquette for<a href="http://www.remains.com/"> Remains Lighting</a>.</div>

<br />
I recently returned from a two week cruise to the Hawaiian islands. The highlight of the trip, without a doubt, was a visit to Doris Duke's Shangri-La in Honolulu. The philanthropist, art collector and "richest girl in the world" fell in love with Islamic art during her honeymoon trip to Palestine, Jordan, Egypt and India in 1936. The final stop on the honeymoon was in Hawaii where the newly weds spent four months. They so enjoyed the easy, casual lifestyle of the islands that they decided to build a home there. They made further trips to the Middle East and Morocco adding to the collection of Islamic art started on the honeymoon.<br />
Doris had hired Marion Sims Wyeth to design the house but was very involved in the design, collecting ideas on her travels. The understated exterior of the house belies the colorful, opulent interior. The two eighteenth century camels are from China.<br />
<br />
In her will she established the Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art which owns and manages the site and collections. The tours of the site are organized by the Honolulu Museum of Art. No photography was allowed inside, but the museum has an excellent website of <a href="http://shangrilahawaii.org/">Shangri-La. </a><br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
What an unforgettable evening Saturday at Los Angeles' Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. The highlight was the Joffrey Ballet's performance of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring. The ballet was first performed in Paris in May of 1913 causing a riot in the audience. I will not get into the avant-garde pagan like music and choreography which changed both art forms for ever. Youtube has a wonderful video in three parts of the entire ballet by Fatova Mingus of Joffrey's 1987 recreation of the Nijinsky choreography which was believed to have been lost. <span style="font-size: xx-small;">Photo by Herbert Migdoll</span></div>

Just as dazzling as the music and the choreography were the costumes, designed by Nicholas Roerich for the 1913 production. <span style="font-size: xx-small;">Photo by Herbert Migdoll</span></div>

The exhibition is titled Cleopatra, even though there are no statues of her or any items that had belonged to her. The Romans destroyed everything pertaining to her after her defeat. There is one papyrus roll that she signed, in Greek, and is touted as an item touched by her hands. However, it is a very informative exhibition, the objects on view date from her lifetime, or around it, give or take a few centuries. The statue above is a statue of a queen, 3rd c. B.C. The masterful carving of the statue, the style of clothing and the type of knot on the shawl are details associated with Aphrodite.</div>

She was a member of the Ptolemaic dynasty, a family of Greek origin that ruled Egypt after Alexander the Great's death. They spoke Greek and refused to speak Egyptian. Cleopatra, however, learned to speak Egyptian, one of the seven languages she spoke. Apparently she was not the ravishing beauty she has been depicted in more recent art and literature but seduced men, Caesar and Mark Antony among them, with her charm and intelligence.</div>

One of the more striking statues is this one of Sarapis. He was a Ptolemaic invention, merging both Egyptian and Greek gods. The statue is from Canopus. Pilgrims traveled there from across the Mediterranean and spent the night sleeping outside Sarapis' temple, the Sarapeum, searching cures which were revealed in dreams interpreted by priests in the morning.</div>

The immense wealth of the Egyptian pharaohs inspired awe and envy throughout the ancient world. As pharaoh, Cleopatra received a percentage of the assets of her subjects. Her lifestyle was opulent and luxurious. She ate and drank from plates and goblets made of pure gold, dressed herself in finest silks and adorned herself with magnificent jewelry, perhaps similar to the ones seen above and below.</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Osiris was the god of the afterlife, the underworld and the dead.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I liked it's reflections on the back wall. The exhibition was very crowded , the light level very low and it was virtually impossible to get decent pictures. Photography was allowed, without flash.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
This figure shows a Ptolemaic royal standing in a pose commonly seen in ancient Egyptian sculpture.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Interesting that the wall paintings and hieroglyphics show figures with head and legs from profile and the the torso from front, in very stylized, stiff postures but the statues are very realistic. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Cleopatra's palace was situated on Antirrhodus island in the great port of Alexandria. This statue of a temple priest with a jar representing the god Osiris stood before the temple of Isis at the palace. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The exhibition certainly revived my interest in ancient Egypt and it's art and culture. Now I can't wait to go there.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
One of my passions is collecting antique Paisley shawls, Kashmiri, Persian and European. The hunt for them is especially exciting. I have found many excellent shawls through internet auctions, but the most fun is going to flea markets, especially in Paris. My favorite is the Porte de Vanves market. I always find something fascinating. Featured here is my most recent acquisition.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-apvIY20G-2E/UHtdHg3DQqI/AAAAAAAAAoY/QyKTRhm-41Y/s1600/GFCie+shawl.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="185" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-apvIY20G-2E/UHtdHg3DQqI/AAAAAAAAAoY/QyKTRhm-41Y/s320/GFCie+shawl.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I was impressed by the excellent condition of the shawl, but fell in love with the rich colors and intricate detail. After inspecting it more carefully at home, I noticed initials in each of the four corners, GF and what looked like a Maltese cross. Researching Monique Levi-Strauss's book Cachemires Parisiens, I discovered that it was manufactured by Gaussen Fargeton. The Maltese cross signifies the Legion d'Honneur and it was used between 1850 and 1857, so this dates the shawl very accurately. Gaussen Fargeton received a medal at the Paris Universal Exhibition in 1855.</div>

The "gates" at two ends can be seen above. I doubt that the dealer at the flea market knew that the shawl was signed or I would imagine he would have pointed it out. Needless to say I am thrilled with my find.</div>

I first visited Lake Tahoe forty years ago, on my honey moon, and recently went back with my husband. We had forgotten how beautiful it is! The water the bluest blue, reflecting the immense sky. The size of the lake surprised us also, yet you can easily drive around it in a day, the road following in most places the shoreline<br />
for breathtaking views of the lake.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We took a boat trip on the lake and the captain pointed out an eagle's nest to us. I took a picture of it and to my great surprise, when I zoomed on it later, I noticed two birds in the nest and one on the branch next to it!<br />
Looks like a mother eagle and a young one in the nest and another young one on the branch, perhaps contemplating it's first flight.<br />

Virginia City is always fascinating to me. The haunting beauty of the desolation keeps me going back.<br />

Karen E. Hudson, the granddaughter of the celebrated architect Paul Williams, above on the right with this blogger, has written a new book on his work, "Paul R. Williams: Classic Hollywood Style", published by<a href="http://rizzoliusa.com/"> </a><a href="http://rizzoliusa.com/">Rizzoli</a>. One of the houses featured is the Preminger House in Brentwood, owned by Merle and Peter Mullin for the past thirty years. Last Sunday they graciously opened their home for a book signing reception, sponsored by Gary Drake of Drake Construction. As I have worked on two Paul Williams houses in the past, it was most delightful to meet Ms. Hudson and visit this beautiful home and of course, to meet the current owners.</div>

I had just watched a program on the gardens of Prince Charles' residence, Highgrove, that morning, and this garden reminded me of it. Art said that he had visited Highgrove many times during different seasons.</div>

Mr. Mullin is an aficionado of 1930s French cars. He has an impressive collection of them in his museum,<a href="http://mullinautomotivemuseum.com/"> The Mullin Automotive Museum</a>, in Oxnard. The residence in Brentwood has a garage below the herb garden with a sampling from the collection. Above is a magnificent 1938 Talbot Lago.</div>

I always enjoy participating in the Pasadena Showcase House, but this year was my favorite. The dark coffered ceiling, even though quite beautiful, posed quite a challenge however, with the dark floor and doors. By using reflective surfaces, such as antiqued mirrors and silver leaf, I feel that I accomplished my my goal of lightening the room, but still respecting the original architecture.<br />
<br />
I am very grateful to my generous resources, whose help makes my task possible, and of course to the Pasadena Showcase committee.<br />

At night, when it was lit up, it was magical, but every hour when the lights started to twinkle, it was breath taking.<br /><br />When I lived in Paris for four years during my student years, I never paid much attention to it, to me is was just a tourist attraction and a bit "kitschy". But now, it has come to symbolize Paris to me. I never went to the top until I went back to Paris as a tourist with my husband and he wanted to see the view of Paris from the top. To my great horror I discovered that I had a fear of heights when we arrived at the top. My knees started shaking and I had to literally crawl down backwards the top stairs. The fear of heights has staid with me, unfortunately. Now I am content to see the tower twinkling at night with my feet on the ground.<br /><br /><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HaBJzY6WnsA/T0lvQFvoCMI/AAAAAAAAAe8/L46rcS6B_II/s1600/Eiffel%2BTower%2B10-11007.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HaBJzY6WnsA/T0lvQFvoCMI/AAAAAAAAAe8/L46rcS6B_II/s400/Eiffel%2BTower%2B10-11007.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5713219924506708162" border="0" /></a>The photo above was taken the night before I flew back to Los Angeles.<br /><br /><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ifKTttqgVuw/T0lvIs96ffI/AAAAAAAAAew/9Qwiq6ZDQqY/s1600/Eiffel%2BTower%2B10-11011.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ifKTttqgVuw/T0lvIs96ffI/AAAAAAAAAew/9Qwiq6ZDQqY/s400/Eiffel%2BTower%2B10-11011.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5713219797596667378" border="0" /></a>When I woke up early the next morning to catch a flight to Los Angeles, I could not believe my eyes. On June 26, 1927, the Los Angeles Times described the house as "a sixteen -room villa...which will grace an estate site of approximately two acres."<br /></div><br /><br /><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-b3bIC2WQmA0/Ty3qYZ-GNSI/AAAAAAAAAc4/HXMz3DGYPzc/s1600/IMG_1959.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-b3bIC2WQmA0/Ty3qYZ-GNSI/AAAAAAAAAc4/HXMz3DGYPzc/s400/IMG_1959.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5705474007957386530" border="0" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">I am very excited having been selected to design the Dining Room, shown above, in it's "before" condition. The room is 15' by 20' and has many interesting original architectural features which I will retain, such as the beautiful coffered ceiling.<br /></div><br /><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-soHnw1EP1L8/Ty3rF4grXwI/AAAAAAAAAdE/S-rmUqsY2kY/s1600/IMG_1976.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 255px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-soHnw1EP1L8/Ty3rF4grXwI/AAAAAAAAAdE/S-rmUqsY2kY/s400/IMG_1976.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5705474789249605378" border="0" /></a><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">The rendering above, by Alex Dorfman, shows how I will be transforming the space. The two side windows are quite short, to elongate them I am adding a valance above each window to stretch them visually. The room is also somewhat dark, so I am using reflecting surfaces, for instance I designed the dining table with an antiqued mirrored glass top to reflect the light from the chandelier.<br /></div><br /><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VoSeTfZLxxg/Ty3qN7LmCCI/AAAAAAAAAcs/ieUrxhVkAcc/s1600/IMG_1945.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VoSeTfZLxxg/Ty3qN7LmCCI/AAAAAAAAAcs/ieUrxhVkAcc/s400/IMG_1945.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5705473827893807138" border="0" /></a><br /><br />The house is called "Casa de las Puertas", House of the Doors. Their beauty and rarity captivated women during most of the 19th century. The fashion was started by Empress Josephine just after 1800 and the rest of Europe followed her, creating a huge demand for the shawls. They originate from Kashmir in India and were hand woven and stitched. The European demand led to the creation of manufacture by jacquard machines in France and Scotland.<br /><br />The above shawl is a Kashmir amlikar shawl. Amlikar refers to the method of weaving. This one is a large rectangular shawl, it is 54" by 123", only one half is shown above<br /></div><br /><br /><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WjTpWY9MqXo/TxtPsWYdO2I/AAAAAAAAAcI/H2ZCBRSK6YM/s1600/IMG_0706.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WjTpWY9MqXo/TxtPsWYdO2I/AAAAAAAAAcI/H2ZCBRSK6YM/s400/IMG_0706.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5700237376708492130" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_lEFSC1GjjM/TxtPect0a3I/AAAAAAAAAb8/XLPI_YiJ1IA/s1600/IMG_0705.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 276px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_lEFSC1GjjM/TxtPect0a3I/AAAAAAAAAb8/XLPI_YiJ1IA/s400/IMG_0705.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5700237137890536306" border="0" /></a>Remnant of the hand stitched signature in white is shown on the black background above.<br /><br /><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YGO5mkJS_Dc/TxtP1CA7pEI/AAAAAAAAAcU/Kd-BPrnNYfk/s1600/IMG_0709.jpg"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YGO5mkJS_Dc/TxtP1CA7pEI/AAAAAAAAAcU/Kd-BPrnNYfk/s400/IMG_0709.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5700237525859935298" border="0" /></a><br />The above image shows the hand stitched back of the shawl.<br /><br />In my Ocarine blog I have introduced some of my shawls and have received offers to purchase them, but at this time I am not selling them. This time I am inside the bowels of the Louvre Museum. Every time I visit, I am not only interested in the art inside, but the interior architecture. The most impressive feature to me is the Escalier Lefuel
<br />or the Lefuel Staircase.

<br />Napoleon III commissioned Hector-Martin Lefuel (1810-1880) to build an addition to the Louvre, known as the New Louvre. (The I.M. Pei renovation with the Pyramid is known as the Grand Louvre.)

The light penetrates through the oval windows on the upper level softening the ambiance. The staircase is in the Richelieu wing. These
<br />pictures were taken this June, when the museum was crowded with visitors. yet there is hardly anyone in sight. A wonderful refuge.

What makes it unique, is it it's log construction and the skills of the peasant population. Stylistically it mixed Renaissance with older Gothic elements. I had the opportunity to visit the church this summer. The church is located on a picturesque peninsula, facilitating the access by boat in the summer and by ice in the winter. The grandson of the builder added the bell tower in 1821. In 1879 a new church was built in the center of Petajavesi and the old church was abandoned. In the 1920s an Austrian art historian Josef Strzygowski brought attention to it's historical and architectural value and since then the church has been repaired several times. Today it is used for weddings and services during the summer months and especially since becoming a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it has been visited by tourists from around the world.<br /></div><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Pj22RpCKmg4/Tjiut8bE21I/AAAAAAAAARY/ltKDvG9wo20/s1600/Petajavesi%2B2.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 267px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Pj22RpCKmg4/Tjiut8bE21I/AAAAAAAAARY/ltKDvG9wo20/s400/Petajavesi%2B2.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5636447037991213906" border="0" /></a>The above floor plan shows the cruciform shape of the church.<br /><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DaDOyCFA2pE/TjiunwyG5OI/AAAAAAAAARQ/lpU_jJEwdws/s1600/Peatjavesi%2B3.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-DaDOyCFA2pE/TjiunwyG5OI/AAAAAAAAARQ/lpU_jJEwdws/s400/Peatjavesi%2B3.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5636446931787375842" border="0" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BOmRhJ3D2RY/TjiuglfLgmI/AAAAAAAAARI/TrJ35YRH_lA/s1600/Petajavesi%2B3b.jpg"><br /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4tiMfGPVQ0A/TjiuYYgzIcI/AAAAAAAAARA/jyRUQsaLTtM/s1600/Petajavesi%2B4.jpg"><img style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-4tiMfGPVQ0A/TjiuYYgzIcI/AAAAAAAAARA/jyRUQsaLTtM/s400/Petajavesi%2B4.jpg" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5636446667574288834" border="0" /></a> The initials of the builders can be seen on the unpainted surface of the beams. The freshest local ingredients, produce grown by local farmers, fish from the nearest fishing harbor, herbs grown in your own herb garden. This is what we expect from our best California restaurants and what we like to serve our guests at home. It was a big surprise to find out that it was exactly what the finest first century Roman meals consisted of as well. Last Thursday night I had a great pleasure to attend a true culinary adventure at the Getty Villa. The evening started with a lecture by food historian Andrew Dalby. It was followed by a dinner planned and prepared by Sally Grainger, a professional chef with a degree in ancient history. The planning of the menu started two years ago and the preparations for the event one year ago! The result was an absolute culinary heaven.<br />

The menu consisted of thirteen dishes. Very few recipes of the period exist. Ms. Grainger has used a collection called Apicius on Cookery, compiled for professional cooks, usually slaves.<br />
The principal flavors were honey, vinegar, a fermented fish sauce and various fresh herbs and spices. Ten of the evenings dishes contained fish sauce, liquamen. Whole fish was fermented for up to three months, the liquid was then strained and bottled. Apparently the smell was so pungent that it's production was outlawed in urban areas. Ms. Grainger calls the fish sauce a magic ingredient that enhances and balances flavors.<br />

Other dishes included Lumbuli Assi, Calf's Kidney Stuffed with Coriander, Fennel Seed and Pine Nuts and Gustum de Cucurbitis Farsilibus, Zucchini stuffed with Calf's Sweetbread. Dressed with Oenogarum (fish sauce) and served with Mixed Greens. The menu also included Ius in Labrix, Sea Bass Fillets in Green Herb Sauce. Various vegetable dishes were also served, including Cymas, Shredded cabbage and Fresh Coriander with a Honey-and-Vinegar Dressing. And yes, it also contained fish sauce.<br />
The dessert consisted of Libum, Honey infused Cake Served with Apricot Patina and Gastris, Sesame Sweetmeat.</div>

I visited Finland and France. Perhaps the most interesting exhibition I saw in Paris was at the Musee Bourdelle, a retrospective of couture dresses created by Madame Gres. Her simple, draped dresses were displayed among very powerful statues by Antoine Bourdelle creating a striking contrast. Madame Gres (1903-1993) was originally trained as a sculptress, and this clearly shows in her way of using fabric. Madame Gres had a very fashionable clientele, including the Duchess of Windsor, Greta Garbo and Jacqueline Kennedy. She also created the perfume Cabochard.<br /><br /><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--WcV2TlS-X8/TgfosivfopI/AAAAAAAAAOY/LzVxlwCVJUA/s1600/Gres%2B2.jpg"><img style="text-align: center; margin: 0px auto 10px; width: 284px; display: block; height: 400px; cursor: pointer;" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5622718511733252754" alt="" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--WcV2TlS-X8/TgfosivfopI/AAAAAAAAAOY/LzVxlwCVJUA/s400/Gres%2B2.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iCfCsP5rtnw/Tgfo6_dNYHI/AAAAAAAAAOg/hBSpoiEFjM8/s1600/Gres%2B3.jpg"><img style="text-align: center; margin: 0px auto 10px; width: 298px; display: block; height: 400px; cursor: pointer;" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5622718759959355506" alt="" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iCfCsP5rtnw/Tgfo6_dNYHI/AAAAAAAAAOg/hBSpoiEFjM8/s400/Gres%2B3.jpg" border="0" /></a>Antoine Bourdelle (1861-1929) started as a woodcarver in his father's cabinet shop, and went to study sculpture in Toulouse. At the age of 24 , he won a scholarship to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He became one of the pioneers of monumental 20th century sculpture. Auguste Rodin became a great admirer and Bourdelle joint him at his atelier, becoming soon a popular teacher.<br />"Contain, maintain and master are the rules of construction" he told his pupils. The same phrase could be applied to the work of Madame Gres.<br /><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZPxw7A915YM/Tgfo_dVvLKI/AAAAAAAAAOo/ftU0VKm9Bo8/s1600/Gres%2B4.jpg"><img style="text-align: center; margin: 0px auto 10px; width: 374px; display: block; height: 400px; cursor: pointer;" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5622718836700556450" alt="" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZPxw7A915YM/Tgfo_dVvLKI/AAAAAAAAAOo/ftU0VKm9Bo8/s400/Gres%2B4.jpg" border="0" /></a>The final version of Bourdelle's statue "Hercules the archer" can be seen in the Musee d'Orsay. We first visited there over thirty years ago and were mesmerized by the beauty of the island. We have been back to the other islands of Hawaii many times, but never made it back to Kauai until this spring. A few things had changed, there were more bunker like hotels ( Kauai has been hit by hurricanes many times) and condominium complexes, but the beauty of Kauai is still breathtaking. I have traveled on many continents, but I can say that the Na Pali Coast of Kauai is the most beautiful place I have ever visited. My little digital camera does not do it true justice. When we arrived at the lookout, we were told that it had been covered by clouds, some people had waited for two hours, but when we arrived, the clouds parted and we were awed by this view.<br /><br />I would like to hear what you consider to be the most beautiful place you ever visited. The house is located in the St. Francis Wood area and was open to the public three weekends in November, closing today. It is always interesting to see what other designers are doing and I was not disappointed.<br />The house was quite small, by showhouse standards, only about 4,000 square feet, on three levels, and especially the bedrooms were very small. This allowed the designers to showcase their skills in space planning.<br /><br />Above is the Library by Will Wick, my favorite room in the house.
